Marist Edges ODU, 3-2
March 1, 2003 NORFOLK, VA. - Tim Allen had three hits including a two-run homer in the the fourth and relief pitcher Chris Homer held off two Monarch rallies as Marist College defeated Old Dominion, 3-2. Marist, the defending MAAC Champions are now 2-0, ODU drops to 4-4. Marist scored first as Mike Sidoti singled home Matt Griffiths in the first inning. With two out in the fourth, Keith Brachold doubled and Allen then homered to right center field. ODU's runs came in the sixth and eighth innings. Steven Harris (Va. Beach, Va.) plated Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.). In the eighth John Oehler's (Audubon, NJ.) groundout scored Derrick James (Terre Haute, IN.). Chris Homer then came in for Marist and got out of the inning with a strikeout. In the ninth Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC) and Brandon Le Noir (Ocala, FL.) Each singled with one out, but Homer got Sollenberger to hit into a double play to end the game. Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.)led ODU with three hits on the day. Chipman, All-American lefthander Chris Tracz, the MAAC 2002 Pitcher of the Year picked up the win, while ODU freshman Ricky Shefka, the CAA Rookie of the Week (Kinston, NC.) took the loss.
