Final Stats

Norfolk, VA-The Rutgers University Scarlet Knights swept a doubleheader with host Old Dominion this afternoon, 7-3 and 3-2, to win the weekend series and improve to 5-1 overall. The Monarchs fall to 4-7.

In game 1, Scarlet Knight Val Majewski launched a seventh inning homer to break open a close game. Majewski finished 3-4 with 3 RBI and 3B Ryan Lillis went 2-4 in the win.

RU's Tom Crohan picked up the win with eight innings of work, scattering eight hits and surrendering just two runs.

Overall, Old Dominion pounded out 13 hits but left 11 men stranded on base.

In game 2 the Scarlet Knights used four ODU errors to steal the game in the final two innings, 3-2.

After tying the game 2-2 in the eighth, Rutgers scored the go-ahead run in the ninth after the Monarchs dropped a fly-ball to center. Old Dominion's Joe Moore (Woodbridge, VA) opened the bottom of the inning with a triple, but the Monarchs couldn't capitalize. Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA) grounded out to third and Rutgers turned a double-play to end the game.

RU's Tom Wheeler went 7.1 innings with two strike-outs. His counterpart, ODU freshman Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA), pitched 7.1 innings as well with seven strikeouts in the no-decision.

RU's Tom Mulchan picked up the win in relief while ODU's Kevin Evans (Shamong, NJ) took the loss.
