Final Stats

Norfolk, VA-Old Dominion freshman Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA) and reliever Jonathan Tinkham (Chesapeake, VA) teamed up to lead the Monarchs to a 5-0 victory over Princeton this afternoon. The Monarchs snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 5-8 while Princeton slips to 0-1 after their first game of the season.

Verlander was overpowering all afternoon, fanning 11 batters in seven innings and surrendering just one hit and two walks. He also benefitted from the play of 3B Kevin Snapp (Yorba Linda, CA) and shortstop Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD), who both helped preserve the shutout with excellent defense.

Tinkham closed the door on the Tigers in the final two innings, holding off a late flurry and ensuring ODU would take game one of the series.

Princeton's Ryan Quillian took the loss, surrendering four runs in four innings while scattering seven hits.

Monarch rightfielder Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA) was 3-4 with two runs scored and Demarque Hairston (Martinsville, VA), Mike Croley (Jupiter, FL) and Strick each contributed with an RBI.

Princeton catcher Tim Lahey was 1-4.

Old Dominion and Princeton will play a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 1 p.m.
