Mistakes Costly in Monarchs' 13-8 Loss at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. - Old Dominion University baseball took a 7-5 lead over Georgia State midway through the game but seven unearned runs cost the Monarchs in a 13-8 setback in game one of the weekend series at Georgia State.
With the loss, ODU falls to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAA while GSU improves to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Trailing 5-4 entering the fourth inning, ODU scored three times to take a 7-5 lead. Mike Perez doubled to start the inning as Tyler Urps followed by getting hit by a pitch to reach base. After a wild pitch moved Urps and Perez up a base, Austin McGowan reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Josh Eldridge ripped a single to right field to score Perez and Urps, while McGowan scored on an error by the pitched to give ODU a 7-5 advantage.
Chad Prain and Josh Merrigan hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at seven.
Georgia State took the lead for good in the sixth inning on a pair of unearned runs. A walk and an error got the GSU inning started before Chad Prain drove in a run with an RBI groundout. Merrigan followed with an RBI single to give the Panthers a 9-7 lead. ODU finished the day with six errors.
ODU cut the lead to 9-8 in the seventh inning when Ben Verlander blasted his fifth homer of the year.
Georgia State came back with a run in the bottom half of the seventh and three more in the eighth to push the lead to the final score of 13-8.
GSU got on the board first with three runs in the first and two more in the second, but only two of the runs were earned.
The Monarchs got on the board in the second on Mike Perez's second home run of the season and cut the lead to 5-4 in the third. Ben Slaton scored Eldridge with a double and Joey Burney drove in two more with a single.
Eldridge led ODU with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate while Verlander, Burney, Perez and Connor Myers had two hits apiece. Prain and Merrigan combined for four hits and seven RBI to lead the Panthers.
Ben Burns pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and just the Verlander homer to pick up the win for GSU. Brad Gero suffered the loss for ODU allowing three runs, one earned, in two innings.
ODU and GSU resume their three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
