WILMINGTON, NC-- ODU senior shortstop Josh Wright homered and junior outfielder Kenneth Belgrave went 3-for-3 in the Monarchs 7-3 loss to CAA leading UNCW Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field. UNCW is now 14-12 overall and 9-2 in the CAA, while ODU is 10-17 overall and 2-6 in the CAA.

UNCW plated four runs in the first inning to back seven strong innings by lefthander Mat Batts. UNCW has now won all four CAA series to open the season. Batts (2-3) allowed just three runs on seven hits and a walk during his outing before giving way to the Seahawk bullpen. Keying the Seahawks on Saturday were Andrew Cain and Hunter Ridge, both with two hits. Ridge added a pair of RBIs while Cain and Drew Farber scored twice.

Trailing, 6-0, ODU scored in the fifth inning. Brandon Shelton led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Brent Frazier.

The Monarchs added two more runs in the eighth inning. Josh Wright led the frame off with his fourth homerun of the season over the leftfield fence. Shawn Sizemore singled and Josh Eldridge followed with a hit. Sizemore came home on Joey Burney's RBI groundout.

Freshman reliever Dylan Bratton pitched two scoreless innings for the Monarchs to lower his ERA to 1.32 on the season. Senior C.J. Huyett also pitched three innings of allowing just one run in relief.

 

 

The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 2 p.m.
