JMU Wins Doubleheader Over Monarchs, 10-4 & 4-1
May 16, 2003 HARRISONBURG, VA--The Dukes of James Madison swept a doubleheader from the Monarchs Friday afternoon, 10-4 in game one, and 4-1 in game two. In the first game, the Dukes slammed four homeruns and pounded out 14 hits in the 10-4 victory. ODU sophomore Justin Verlander pitched only four-plus innings fanning nine. He now owns the ODU singleseason strikeout mark with 139, breaking ODU Hall of Famer Kevin Bearse ('87) record of 138 set in 1985. Matt Deuchler and Mitch Rigsby each knocked in three runs for the Dukes. Brian Leatherwood picked up the win. Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) led ODU with two hits and two runs scored, he also hit a homerun. Brent Sollenberger(Chambersburg, PA.) and John Oehler (Audubon,NJ.) each had two hits on the day. In game two Travis Ebaugh, Mike Butia, and Mitch Rigsby each knocked in a run and Chris Cochran won his ninth game of the season for JMU. ODU's lone run came in on Evan Chipman's single which plated Jesse Schoendiest.
