Norfolk, VA -- Senior rightfielder Travis Silver (Weaverville, NC) went 3 for 5 with a grand slam tonight, helping Old Dominion defeat cross-town rival Norfolk State, 15-3. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 14-19 while the Spartans fall to 7-17 on the year.

The game started off promisingly enough for NSU, as Eugene Goodson and Charles Mann each drove in a run in the first inning to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Old Dominion retaliated quickly, however, knocking in five first-inning runs of their own on just one hit.

After NSU cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning, Silver provided the fireworks for the Monarchs with his first grand slam of the year, driving in four runs and breaking the game open.

Old Dominion put the game away for good in the fifth inning, as leftfielder Ryan Dunn (Bristol, VA) and Silver combined to drive in three runs.

Charles Mann and Nicholas Morant each finished 2 for 4 on the evening for the Spartans.

Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD) went 3 for 6 at the plate for the Monarchs, and Silver finished with 5 rbi. Designated hitter Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ), who was also the winning pitcher, finished 1 for 4.

Old Dominion will be in action this weekend, when they travel to CAA foe UNC-Wilmington for a three game series.
