Four Monarchs Earn All-CAA Honors

WILMINGTON, NC--Old Dominion University's Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.), Dan Hudson (Virginia Beach, VA.), David Burns (Jacksonville, Fl.) and Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA. ) were all named second team All-CAA today as selected by the leagues head baseball coaches. Miles, a senior centerfielder led ODU with a .370 batting average along with 38 stolen bases and 56 runs scored. Miles currently ranks fourth nationally in stolen bases. Miles missed last season because of an injury, but was also a second team All-CAA pick in 2006. Dan Hudson, a junior righthander posted a 5-5 record with a 4.45 earned run average. Hudson led the CAA in strikeouts with 102 in just 85 innings of work. Hudson fanned 10 or more batters four times, including 13 against JMU, and 12 against Delaware. David Burns, a senior designated hitter led ODU with 11 homers and 42 RBI. Burns knocked in seven runs in a game against nationally ranked East Carolina and had four RBI against Richmond and Hofstra. Junior righthander Anthony Shawler posted a 5-3 record with a 4.71 earned run average. He fanned a school record tying 18 batters against Northeastern and fanned 10 or more batters five times. Shawler was second in the CAA only to teammate Dan Hudson with 94 strikeouts in 72.2 innings. Shawler was also named third team All-CAA outfielder, as he hit .315 with seven
homers and 39 RBI. He knocked in six runs with two homers in a game against
William and Mary, and had the teams longest hitting streak of 19 games earlier this
season. Both Shawler and Hudson were the top two in the CAA in strikeouts last year as well.
The fifth seeded Monarchs open the 2008 CAA Baseball Championships Wednesday at 12 noon against second seeded James Madison. George Mason will play William and Mary t 3:30 and UNCW will play Towson at 7 p.m. All games will be played at UNC Wilmington's Brooks Field.
