NORFOLK, VA- Pitcher Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) and shortstop Brandon Carter (Sacramento, CA.) have signed with the major league teams they were drafted by, and will now report to their respective minor league teams.

Smith, who was selected in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals has been assigned to the New Jersey Cardinals (NY Penn League) in Augusta, NJ. Smith led the CAA with a 2.29 earned run average. The Norcom High School grad was 6-2 with 99 strikeouts in 86.1 innings and six saves. He was a second team All-CAA selection.

Brandon Carter hit .309 and led the Monarchs in runs scored with 37 and stolen bases with 13. He has been assigned to the Gulf Coast Dodgers (Gulf Coast League) in Vero Beach, Fl. Carter was selected in the 40th round by the Dodgers.

NOTE: Tim Hummel, a 2000 first team Consensus All-American and CAA Player Of the Year went three-for-three last night as the Cincinnati Reds beat Texas, 7-4. Hummel hit a solo homer in the third inning and scored two other times. He is currently hitting .271. He played both first and third base last night.
