  • Picture of Jeff Capel Jeff Capel has guided the Monarchs to a 109-80 record in six seasons, including winning the Colonial Athletic Association and advancing to the NCAA tournament twice.

    Overall, he has a 188-145 career record, in 11 seasons. Last November,the Monarchs gave Capel his 100th coaching victory with a win over Central Florida. He is currently the third winningest coach in CAA history with 69 league victories.

    In three of the last four seasons, Old Dominion has been ranked as one of the top defensive teams in the nation, holding opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the floor.

    In 1999, the Monarchs roared to a 25-9 record, tying the school mark for most wins in a season. Capel's squad reached the CAA finals and advanced to the second round of the NIT which included an opening round victory over Seton Hall. The Monarchs held opponents to .377 shooting from the floor to rank sixth nationally.

    In 1995, his first year as the Monarchs head coach, Old Dominion compiled a 21-12 record, captured the Colonial Athletic Association regular season and tournament title, then capped it off with a thrilling 89-81 triple overtime win over Big East champion Villanova in the NCAA Tournament.

    Capel was named 1995 Coach-of-the-Year in the CAA and in NABC District Four, which made him one of 15 finalists for National Coach of the Year honors. His three seniors, Mike Jones, Petey Sessoms and David Harvey all graduated on time. In 1996, the Monarchs compiled an 18-13 record and placed second in the CAA. Last season, a youthful Monarch squad placed fourth in the CAA and held opponents to just .396 shooting from the field.

    His 1997 edition won the CAA title with a thrilling 62-58 overtime decision over James Madison. The Monarchs advanced to the NCAA first round against 11th ranked New Mexico. He was named the Coach of the Year in the State of Virginia by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.

    Capel came to Old Dominion in 1994, after leading North Carolina A&T to a 16-14 record in 1993-94, (15-5 down the stretch) MEAC (Mid Eastern Athletic Conference) tournament title and a trip to the NCAA. The Aggies lost to eventual NCAA champion Arkansas in the first round.

    Capel, 47, was previously the head coach for four seasons at his alma mater, Fayetteville State University.After a 7-21 mark in his first season, he turned the program around and the Broncos posted 14-13, 22-8 and 20-9 marks.

    The 22-8 record in 1991-92 was Fayetteville's best season in school's history, as the team reached the CIAA semi-finals. In 1992-93, the Broncos earned an NCAA Division II tournament bid to the South Atlantic Region with a 20-9 record.

    From 1986-89, Capel served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest under Bob Staak. Prior to that stint, he was head coach at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, NC., where he compiled an 111-61 record in eight years. He also served as assistant principal at Pinecrest.

    After serving five years in the armed forces, Capel graduated from Fayetteville State University in 1977 with a degree in health and physical education. He and his wife, Jerry, have two sons, Jeff, III (25), graduate of Duke University and Jason (20) a junior at the University of North Carolina and member of the UNC basketball squad.

    In October of 1999, Capel was inducted into the Fayetteville State University Hall of Fame. He became Old Dominion's 11th head basketball coach and fourth Division I head coach on April 26, 1994.
