Monarchs Drop 84-72 Contest to Delaware

NORFOLK, VA--Devon Saddler scored 27 and Jarvis Threatt added 19 to lead Delaware (6-8/1-0) to a 84-72 Colonial Athletic Association win over Old Dominion (2-13/0-3) Saturday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The Monarchs had four players in double-figures led by freshman Keenan Palmore (Stone Mountain, GA.) with 14.
The Fightin Blue Hen's knocked down a Constant Center record 41-50 free throws led by Threatt's 19-for 20 and Saddler's 10-for-10 (ODU was 20-34 from the line). In all, the two teams combined for 61-84 free throws. Threatt scored all 19 of his points from the line for Delaware. UD's forward Jamelle Hagins added 11 points with a game high 16 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season and was one rebound shy of the Constant Center record 17 owned by Jason Thompson of Rider on March 18, 2008.
In addition to Palmore's 14 points, he dished out five assists and came up with three steals. Senior forward DeShawn Painter (Norfolk, VA.) scored 13 points with eight rebounds, followed by freshman guard Deion Clark (Naples, FL.) with 13 points and senior Nick Wright (Suffolk, VA.) with 10 points and six rebounds.
Delaware shot .452 (19-42) from the floor and became the first team to outrebound ODU this year, 43-39. The Monarchs committed only 12 turnovers and came up with nine steals as they forced UD into 21 turnovers. ODU senior Donte Hill led with four steals on the day, while Delaware was led by Hagins with three.
ODU played without freshman guard Aaron Bacote (Hampton, VA.) who suffered a concussion in the JMU game.
The previous Constant Center record for the most opponent free throws was 23-31, also set by Delaware on Feb. 14, 2004.
The Monarchs return to action next Thursday when they travel to Fairfax, VA. To take on George Mason in a 7 p.m. NBCSN televised contest.
