ATLANTA - Senior DeShawn Painter scored 15 points and grabbed a career high 14 rebounds and Richard Ross scored 15 along with nine boards, but the Monarchs lost to Georgia State Saturday afternoon, 83-63. The double-double by Painter was his sixth of the season.

GSU was led by freshman R.J. Hunter who poured in a career-high 38 points, including a school- and Colonial Athletic Association-record 10 3-pointers.

Georgia State (12-12/7-4) have won six of their last seven, while ODU (2-19/0-9 have lost nine straight. Hunter ties the CAA mark of10 treys in a game by Dre Smith of George Mason against JMU in 2008. ODU sharpshooting great Mark Poag ('99) made nine in 1997 against VMI.

Hunter, the son of coach Ron Hunter, hit 10 of 15 3-pointers and scored the most points by any CAA player this season. It's the most by a Georgia State player since Anton Reese had 38 in 1998.

GSU jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first four minutes of the game thanks to four treys, but the Monarchs battled back and tied the game at 22-22 with 7:09 left in the half on a dunk by red-shirt sophomore Richard Ross. Senior Nick Wright, who would score 13 points on the day would put the Monarchs up, 24-22 with a tip in.

Georgia State would regain the lead for good when Hunter hit a three-pointer for a 25-24 lead. He then followed with two free throws for a 27-24 lead. The Panthers would then take a 33-28 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Hunter would score 27 points. In one 5-minute stretch of the second half, he scored 19 straight Georgia State points on five treys, and two foul shots and a layup. He finished 12 for 18 from the floor. Manny Atkins added 16 points and nine rebounds, followed by ten points and eight assists from Devonta White.


 

 

Dimitri Batted added nine points with three assists and Aaron Bacote scored seven points for the Monarchs.

The Panthers shot .538 (28-52) from the field and were 16-33 (.485) from beyond the arc. ODU shot .323 (21-65) from the field. The Monarchs outrebounded GSU, 43-31.

ODU returns home to host George Mason Monday night at 7 p.m. in a NBCSN telecast at the Constant Center.
