Monarchs Send Seniors Out in Style With 77-58 Win

NORFOLK, Va. - Frank Hassell and Keyon Carter combined for 34 points as Old Dominion blew past William and Mary in front of a sold out senior day crowd of 8,457 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Saturday evening, 77-58. The sellout is the fifth of the season for ODU and the ninth crowd of over 8,000, bringing the average attendance this season to a school record 7,745 which is an all-time home record. The old mark was 7,492 in 1979-80. ODU honored its four seniors, Darius James, Frank Hassell, Keyon Carter and Ben Finney before the game, and they did not disappoint. The group scored a combined 54 points to lead the way and with the win ties them with the 2008 and 2010 senior classes as the winngingest in school history with 94 victories. ODU enjoyed a 42-32 halftime lead before William & Mary came out on fire to begin the second half. The Tribe closed the gap to four at 51-47 on a pair of Brandon Britt free throws, but ODU scored seven-straight points to go back up by 11. The Monarchs continued to pound away, going on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 19, the largest of the game. Old Dominion came out in the first half ready to play, taking a 13-3 lead in the first seven minutes. The Tribe cut the lead to five with five minutes to play, however, ODU scored seven straight, four by Hassell and a three-pointer by Carter, to jump the lead back to 12 before taking a 10-point lead into halftime. Hassell recorded his 14th double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Carter just missed one, with 16 points and nine boards. James chipped in 11 points and five assists, while Finney added nine points and six boards. ODU again dominated the boards, 47-15 and should add to their nation's leading rebound margin stat at plus 12.3. The University of Pittsburgh is second at 11.6. ODU grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and had 18 second chance points. W&M only had four offensive rebounds. The Monarchs dished out 19 assists led by Darius James with five. From the floor, ODU was .529 (27-51), while the Tribe was .347 (17-49). Hassell was six-for nine from the flor and Keyon Carter was six-of-seven. Julian Boatner shot 6-of-13 from three-point land, accounting for all of his team-best 18 points. Brandon Britt added 15 points. The Tribe's 12 made three-pointer's ties the opponent Constant Center record with Belmont and Cleveland State. The Monarchs will be the number two seed in next weeks CAA Championships which begin on March 4th. The Monarchs and the other three top four seeds will get a bye from the first day of play.
