NORFOLK, Va. (AP, Jan. 19) - Andre McCullum scored nine of his 13 points in the second half, including a key jumper to protect a precarious lead and then four free throws in the last 11 seconds, as Old Dominion held on to beat American 62-57.

Old Dominion (7-11, 2-5 Colonial Athletic Association) led by 46-35 with 12:54 to play, then saw American close the gap to two on three occassions. Each time, the Monarchs answered with a basket, the last by McCullum with 2:12 to play to make it 57-53.

American (7-9, 2-3) got no closer than four thereafter as neither team scored for more than two minutes until McCullum hit two free throws with 11 seconds left.

After Patrick Doctor made two at the line for American with :09 left, McCullum again made two from the line and the Monarchs led 61-55 with just :08 to play.

Doctor led American with 20 points and Saliou-Binet Telly and Keith Gray had 10.

Freshman Ricardo Marsh scored a career high 15 points, while McCullum recorded his fourth double-double adding 10 boards. The Monarchs play at William and Mary Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
