NORFOLK, VA. (AP) (Jan. 29) -- Andre McCullum scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half, including two key free throws with 2:30 to play, and Old Dominion withstood a closing rally by Virginia Commonwealth to beat the Rams 72-69 on January 29.

McCullum, who was 8-for-8 from the line, restored a 4-point lead for the Monarchs (9-12, 4-5 Colonial Athletic Association) after they had squandered most of a 10-point lead. Clifton Jones later hit 1-of-2 from the line after the Rams got within 71-69.

Virginia Commonwealth (10-8, 3-4) got 15 points from L.F. Likcholitov and 13 from Bo Jones, but the Rams missed nine of 14 free throw chances in the second half.

Michael Williams added 19 points for the Monarchs, 12 after the break, and Skipper Youngblood had 11, including a crucial dunk with 1:30 left that made it 71-66.
