ODU Outlasts East Carolina, 65-63
NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 30, 2001) -- Old Dominion and East Carolina went down to the wire this evening, with the
Monarchs claiming a last second 65-63 victory. Old Dominion improves to 5-4
CAA, 10-12 overall. The Pirates drop to 5-5 CAA, 13-8 overall.
The Monarchs scored the game's first two points, but would not take the lead again until there was just 1:34 remaining on the clock, when Andre McCullum drained a jumper to put the Monarchs ahead 63-61. After ECU's Gabriel Mikulas tied the game at the one minute mark, Old Dominion's Clifton Jones and Michael Williams each added a free throw to reclaim the lead, 65-63 with twenty-four seconds left. The Pirates had one more chance, but forward Erroyl Bing's three point shot came up just short, and the Monarchs had their win. Old Dominion finished the game with every player in the lineup contributing on the scoreboard. Freshman guards John Waller and Troy Nance contributed eight and six points respectively, leading a bench effort that amounted to 25 points for the Monarchs. Senior center Clifton Jones scored 6 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, and sophomore forward Ricardo Marsh added 10. Senior forward Andre McCullum, who became the 37th player in ODU's history to score 1,000 points with his first bucket of the night, lead the team in scoring with 13. ECU was lead by Gabriel Mikulas' 21 points and Fred Primus' 19. Primus finished the game 5-12 in three point shots. The Monarchs outrebounded ECU 45-39, and shot .393 to the Pirates' .349. Old Dominion will return to action on Wednesday, February 7, when they travel to CAA foe American.
