ODU Falls At East Carolina, 68-63, In OT
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 17) - Gabriel Mikulas scored a game-high 20 points to lead East Carolina to a 68-63 overtime win against Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association play on Wednesday night (Jan. 17). The victory marked the Pirates eighth consecutive win of the season at home and fourth straight regular season win over the Monarchs. "I was worried about our fatigue towards the end because we had a lot of players who play a lot of minutes," said Pirate head coach Bill Herrion. "When we get the ball to Mikulas, good stuff usually happens and that's what we're trying to do." East Carolina (11-6, 3-3), who trailed by nine less than three minutes into the second half, went on a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes of the half to take a 40-38 lead with 10:07 remaining in regulation. The game would experience six ties and two lead changes over the final 10 minutes of regulation setting up the overtime period. Junior Kenyatta Brown scored 15 of his season-high 17 points after intermission, including what proved to be the game winning basket in overtime. Brown's three-point bucket with 1:28 remaining in the extra session broke a 61-61 tie and propelled the Pirates to victory. Brown's three-pointer was ECU's lone field goal of the overtime period, but the Pirates made 8-of-8 free throws in the final five minutes. Brown sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 0:07.5 seconds left to help the Pirates remain unbeaten at home this season (8-0). East Carolina finished 22-of-24 from the charity stripe. "We've been good at the free throw line so far this season and that is a good luxury to have," said Herrion. "Its especially good when you have players on the inside who can shoot free throws well and play well inside." Trailing by three with under 10 seconds to play in regulation, Old Dominion's Rasheed Wright hit a three-pointer from the corner to force the extra session. Old Dominion (7-11, 3-3) made just three field goals during overtime and didn't step to the foul line. Ricardo Marsh led the Monarchs with 17 points, while Andre McCullum added 15. The Pirates will return to action Saturday, January 20, against American. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Bender Arena in Washington D.C.
