NORFOLK, Va. -- The Villanova Wildcats handed the #3/3 Football Monarchs their first loss of the 2012 campaign with a 38-14 win over ODU on its Homecoming. The Monarchs, who had won nine of their last 10 games dating back to October 22nd of last season and were riding a six-game home win streak, fall to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Wildcats, winners of the 2009 FCS National Championship, improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in league action. The Monarchs went up 14-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter, but Villanova would go on to score 38 unanswered points behind three rushing touchdowns by quarterback John Roberston. Robertson finished the game with 151 yards passing and a game-high 189 yards rushing. Old Dominion struck fast needing only four plays to get on the scoreboard and tying the school mark for fastest touchdown. The Monarchs' four-play, 88-yard opening drive took just 1:07 capped by a 17-yard reception by Nick Mayers. The Wildcats got onto the scoreboard on their next drive, right before the end of the opening quarter. Mark Hamilton connected on a 26-yard field goal after missing a 32-attempt midway through the first quarter. Villanova started off the second quarter from its own seven, but found its way downfield field with Robertson hitting Norman White for a 44-yard touchdown reception with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter and Old Dominion leading 14-10 at the half. Robertson found his way into the end zone in back-to-back drives to kick off the third quarter with 25 and 15 yard runs. A Monarch fumble at the end of the third quarter set up another scoring drive for the Wildcats with Robertson punching in his third touchdown of the game to start the fourth quarter. ODU's opening drive of the final stanza saw the Monarchs get down to the Wildcats' 18 at fourth and three, but quarterback Taylor Heinicke's pass was incomplete to Nick Mayers turning the ball back over Villanova. Just like what the Monarchs did to Richmond two weeks ago, Villanova methodically wore down the clock and using nearly eight minutes to run 14-plays and go 82-yards for its final score of the contest on a 25-yard run by Kevin Monangai. Monangai finished the game with 188 yards on 26 carries. The Monarchs, who led the nation in total offense at nearly 655 yards a game, was held to 111 yards rushing and 239 yards receiving. Redshirt sophomore Antonio Vaughan captured his second 100+ yard receiving game of the season with a game-high 103 yards on five catches. Junior Colby Goodwyn posted 39 yards on the ground. Monarch signal caller Taylor Heinicke threw for 239 yards completing 16 of his 32 passes with one interception. The Football Monarchs return to action at Towson, last year's CAA Champion, on Saturday October 20th. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
