MIDLOTHIAN, VA--ODU rising senior Jeffrey Long (Centreville, VA.) shot a 70 in the final round to finish with a 72 hole score of 283 and seventh place in the State Open of Virginia. Roger Newsom of Virginia Beach defeated Chip Sullivan of Troutville, Va. In a playoff for the tournament title played At the Independence Golf Club. They both finished at 275.

Long fired rounds of 70 in three of the four days, and 73 on Saturday to finish five strokes under par. Newsome was the only amateur in the event with a better score than Long.

During the year, Long had eight top 20 finishes for ODU. He placed 10th at Hartford and 11th at Kauai and the CAA Championships. He compiled a 73.6 stroke average in the Spring and a 73.3 Overall stroke average.
