Men's Soccer Falls to William & Mary in CAA Tournament, 2-0
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Justin Smiley (Prince George, Va./Prince George) flicked in a header off a corner kick and Phil Hucles (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) added an insurance goal in the closing minutes as defending champion William & Mary defeated #2-seed Old Dominion University, 2-0, in the semifinals of the 2000 CAA Men's Soccer Championship at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. First Team All-CAA defender Kevin Knott (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville), the conference assist leader, bent a beautiful ball at the goal which Smiley finished past ODU keeper Sam Cameron inside the left post at 75:33. The goal was Smiley's third on the season while Knott increased his league-leading assist total to 14. A Second Team All-CAA selection, Hucles powered in an unassisted score at 77:20 on a rebound off the crossbar as the Tribe avenged a 1-0 regular season loss to the Monarchs. The goal was the 13th of the year for the W&M freshman who recorded a goal for the fifth consecutive game. Hucles tops the team in goals (13) and is tied for the team lead with 27 points. W&M sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Upton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) recorded seven saves and posted his second shutout of the tournament in just his fifth start of the season. The tournament's #3-seed, the Tribe (11-8-2) will face top-seed and #12-ranked James Madison University (17-2-1) for the CAA crown on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm. W&M, who posted an 8-0 win over UNC Wilmington in the CAA semifinals, has made five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and seven post-season appearances in the last eight years. With the loss, ODU drops to 10-6-2.
