Robert Hale became the first Old Dominion University tennis player to earn a top 50 national ranking, when he vaulted to number 43 in 1981. Hale set a school record with 14 straight victories as a senior in 1981. In all, Hale compiled a 28-6 career record during his two seasons at Old Dominion.

Hale came to Old Dominion after an outstanding career at Seminole Community College in Florida. He captured the Virginia Intercollegiate State singles championship in the fall of 1980.

In 1979, Hale teamed with Bill Clark to win the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championship at number two doubles. During his two seasons at Old Dominion, Hale helped lead the Monarchs to the 1979 and 1980 Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships. The squad compiled a 25-10 record.

After graduation, Hale played on satellite tours and was the Davis Cup player captain, then a coach in Jamaica. He also worked with the Jamaican Tennis Association.

Hale, originally from Willowdale, Ontario, Canada graduated with a degree in marketing management.
