Men's Tennis Advances With 4-0 Quarterfinal Win Over Hofstra

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (April 22, 2005) - The top four seeds were all victorious in the quarterfinals of the 2005 CAA Men's Tennis Championship Friday at Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va. The third-seeded Monarchs advanced with a 4-0 victory over #6 Hofstra setting up a showdown with William & Mary in the semifinals. Top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth defeated #8 Drexel 5-0, #2 William & Mary blanked #7 Delaware 4-0, #3 Old Dominion beat #6 Hofstra 4-0 and #4 UNC Wilmington got past #5 James Madison 4-2. In Saturday's semifinal action, VCU will face UNCW, while W&M meets ODU. Both matches are set for 1 p.m. ODU captured the doubles point as the #2 team of Eidy Igarashi/Rodrigo Souza posted an 8-4 win and the #3 tandem of Henrique Cancado/Juliano Cirimbelli recorded an 8-3 triumph. ODU clinched the win with three straight-set victories in singles as #2 Cancado won 6-0, 6-2 over Hofstra's Luka Djordjevic, #3 Igarashi beat HU's Matt Schor 6-4, 6-0 and #4 Souza defeated the Pride's Tal Alexander 6-3, 6-1. The Monarchs are looking to avenge an earlier 7-0 loss to the Tribe which came on the heels of Old Dominion's upset victory over Virginia Commonwealth, which had handed the Rams just their second CAA loss.
