NORFOLK, VA -- Five Monarch men's tennis singles players along with two Old Dominion doubles teams advanced in the first day of play at the East Coast Collegiate Championships held by Old Dominion University.

All five Monarchs advanced with straight set wins on the day. Sophomore Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Phillip Holliday of Mt. St. Mary's in Flight A. In Flight B, junior Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India) the Mount's Drew Arbeiter to continue on to the round of 16 with his 6-3, 6-1 win. Two Monarchs were featured in Flight C action with both Patrik Binkowski (Orby, Sweden) and Niklas Oskarsson (Halmstad, Sweden) posting wins to reach the quarterfinals. Binkowski defeated Catawba's Eric Knoll (6-1, 6-4), while Oskarsson advanced with a win over American's Andreas Kulscar (6-3, 6-2).

Both doubles teams advanced to the semi-final round. After receiving a first round bye, the tandem of Binkoski and Csandani, ranked seventh in Flight A doubles, defeated Tommy Huffman and Slobodan Stipic of VMI, 8-3. Flight B duo of Calin Milos (Timisoara, Romania) and Oskarsson won two matches on the afternoon with wins over Evan Bolwin and Allen Slimesh (9-7) of Catawba and Joakim Arhammer and Sominic Soeur (8-2) of Richmond.

Action will continue through Sunday in the 2001 East Coast Collegiate Championships on the campus of Old Dominion.
