Lopez Villa Named Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas - Old Dominion University men's tennis is competing in its first season in Conference USA and is already making an impression, as sophomore Carlos Lopez Villa was named men's tennis Athlete of the Week, C-USA announced on Tuesday. He is the first Monarch to win a Conference USA Athlete of the Week honor. Lopez Villa enjoyed a great start to the season, his first playing at No. 1 singles, defeating No. 32 Juan Spir of Georgia Tech, 6-4, 6-4 in the season opening match on Friday. On Sunday, Lopez Villa cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Igor Braga of Norfolk State. In doubles, Lopez Villa and sophomore Can Cetinel, ranked No. 23, gave the No. 3 team of Spir and Vikram Hundal all they could handle before falling 8-6. On Sunday, Lopez Villa and Cetinel were 8-4 winners over Norfolk State. Lopez Villa will look to improve on his 2-0 start to the season when the Monarchs host Richmond on Saturday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
