NORFOLK, VA-- Three-time NCAA All-American Izak van der Merwe ('05) moved up to No. 159 in the ATP World tennis rankings after he recently won a $50,000 Challenger and advanced to the finals of a second challenger in Brazil.

Izak's next tournament will be the US Open qualifying tournament beginning August 24th. Izak is currently 2-1 this year and 8-7 for his pro career.

At ODU, van der Merwe, a native of Kempton Park, South Africa earned All-American honors twice in singles (2004 and 2005) and once in doubles (2004). He was the CAA Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 and was six-time first team All-CAA selection. He reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in doubles in 2004 and singles in 2005.

Van der Merwe was one of seven Monarch tennis players named to the CAA's 25th Anniversary Men's Tennis Team.
