Alex Seleznev Reaches Southern Intercollegiate Semifinals
Sept. 11, 2006 ATHENS, Ga. -- The three members of the Old Dominion men's tennis team at the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of the University of Georgia wrapped up play on Monday. Sophomore Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) reached the semifinals of the Division II singles bracket, while sophomore Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) both reached the quarterfinals of the Division I singles and doubles bracket. Seleznev used straight sets to reach the semifinals as he defeated Joakim Karlsson of Lander University, 6-3, 6-4. However, his run in the tournament came to an end in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Tennessee's Kaden Hensel. Srugo, the tournament's fourth seed ranking 18th in the Preseason ITA Poll, fell to Marek Sramek of Southern Alabama, 6-1, 6-4. Cancado meanwhile was edged out by Duke's Kiril Dimitrov, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles play, No. 52 Srugo and Cancado, the tournament's eighth seeded doubles team, picked up two wins before falling in the quarterfinals. After receiving a Round of 64 bye, the duo picked up an 8-1 win over Daniel Isaza/Travis Sandlant of East Tennessee State. In the Round of 32, the Monarch double teams advanced after the Kentucky team of Shane Collins/Bruno Agostinelli withdrew from competition. In the quarterfinals, John Isner/Luis Flores of host Georgia and seeded second, put an end to Srugo and Cancado's run with an 8-6 win. The Monarchs return to action in two tournament next weekend. The Old Dominion men's tennis team will be participating in the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville and the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virgina Beach.
