Ryan Williams will join the Monarchs coaching staff in 2009 after completing one of the most remarkable seasons in ODU wrestling history. Williams was a NCAA Finalist, CAA Champion and became the all-time leader in wins at ODU in 2008.

Williams became just the second Monarch wrestler ever to advance to a NCAA Final. He was an eighth seed at Nationals at 141-pounds and won four matches before finally falling to the defending national champion in the finals. Williams completed his senior season 39-4 overall to end his illustrious career with 137 total victories.

In addition to his stellar performance at NCAA's, Williams also captured the CAA Tournament crown for the second consecutive season. He went 3-0 at the CAA Tournament and was named the league's Wrestler of the Year.

Williams was a catalyst for the Monarchs all season, going a remarkable 22-1 in dual meets, leading ODU to a 17-6 record. Williams became the highest nationally ranked individual under the Steve Martin coaching regime, listed at third in the country in the final rankings. He led ODU to its highest national team ranking in school history, at 16th in the country.

Williams was also named VaSID First Team All-State and was a member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team. He was the second All-American under Martin and the 10th all-time for ODU.

As the newest member of the coaching staff, Williams will look to provide a great amount of energy to go along with a wealth of experience to a Monarch squad that will look to continue on last years success.
