HAMPTON, VA (January 10, 2003)- The Old Dominion Wrestling team (2-1) finished the first day of the Va. Duals with a 1-1 record after defeating The Apprentice School 35-7 but falling to SUNY-Brockport 25-22 in Friday's action at the Hampton Coliseum. Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) at 133, Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) at 174, Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) at 184 and Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) at 285 each won both of their bouts Friday.

The Monarchs easily handled local rivals The Apprentice School winning eight of ten weight classes. Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NY) at 157 and Wright each recorded falls in the first round of their respective matches. Buckner earned a 17-1 Technical Fall at 5:21 in his class.

ODU and SUNY-Brockport battled to a 19-19 tie after Summerlin pinned Don Favro at the 174 mark and Wright won with a ride out decision, leaving only two bouts remaining. At 197, Robert Cuffie was able to pin ODU's Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) at 1:41 to give his squad a 25-19 advantage. Needing a fall to tie, Lorthridge was only able to earn an 8-2 decision, leaving the Monarch's three points shy in the 25-22 loss, ODU's first in dual action this season.

ODU will compete again tomorrow in the last day of Virginia Dual action at 6:00 p.m. SUNY-Brockport and Maryland will meet in the finals of the American Division at 8:30 p.m.
