HAMPTON, Va. - The No. 25 Old Dominion University wrestling team kicked off the 33rd annual Virginia Duals with a 26-9 victory over The Citadel at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. However, in the Monarchs' second match, they fell to No. 16 Edinboro 21-12. ODU will wrestle Bucknell tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
Match #1: No. 25 Old Dominion vs. The Citadel
Action kicked off at 125-pounds, as ODU's No. 10 Jerome Robinson faced-off against The Citadel's Joaquin Marquez. Robinson jumped off to an early 7-1 lead at the conclusion of the first period. Robinson never looked back as he won by major decision (14-1) to give ODU four team points.
No. 19 Scott Festejo met Aaron Hansen in the battle of 133-pounders. Hansen struck first with two takedowns and a 4-0 lead. Festejo would answer Hansen's hot start with an escape and a takedown of his own to cut into the lead, 4-3, at the end of the first period. After a Festejo escape in the second period, the wrestlers went into the third period all nodded up at 4-4. Festejo started the third period with a takedown to take a 6-4 lead. Festejo would later get a point off riding time to defeat Hansen 7-4. The Monarchs took an early 7-0 advantage over The Citadel.
In the 141-pound bout, ODU's Justin LaValle squared-off against The Citadel's top-ranked wrestler, No. 8 Undrakhabayar Khishingnyan. On January 2, Khishingnyan defeated LaValle 5-3 in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. Khishingnyan got off to a 4-0 start in the first period. Khishingnyan would extend his lead to 7-2 after the second period. LaValle would start the third period with an escape and then a takedown to cut the lead to 7-5. With 30 seconds left in the match, LaValle would escape to cut the deficit to one point; however, Khishingnyan would hold off LaValle on his way to a 7-6 decision. This gave The Citadel their first points of the dual, cutting into ODU's lead, 7-3.
No. 31 Alexander Richardson and Jordan Dix wrestled two periods of scoreless wrestling before Richardson would take Dix down and take a 2-0 lead in the third period. Nearly three minutes of riding time gave Richardson a 3-1 victory and Old Dominion a 10-3 lead over The Citadel.
Brennan Brumley wrestled for the Monarchs at 157-pounds. Brumley faced The Citadel's Matthew Frisch, who placed eighth at the Southern Scuffle. After a scoreless first round, Brumley went into the third period down 2-1. Brumley would escape in the third period to send the match to overtime. In overtime, Brumley won by sudden-victory (4-2) over Frisch, which gave ODU a 13-3 lead over The Citadel.
ODU's Brett Miller went up against Michael Harper in the 165-pound match. No scoring occurred until Miller escaped in the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third period. Miller would start the third period off with a takedown to give him a 3-0 lead and victory. This win extended Old Dominion's lead to 16-3.
174-pounder, Billy Curling got off to a quick start against The Citadel's John Duane with a two-point takedown. Curling took a 5-0 lead into the third period, where he got another takedown, escape and point for riding time to major decision Duane, 9-0. This gave the Monarchs four team points and a 20-3 cushion over The Citadel.
Austin Coburn met Josh Tuck in a battle of 184-pounders. Coburn started the second period off with an escape, but Tuck countered that with a takedown and a 2-1 lead going into the third period. Tuck started the third period with a takedown; however, Coburn would get three points off a near-fall to tie the score at 4-4 and send the match into overtime. It took Coburn and Tuck three tie-breakers to settle the match, but Coburn would eventually escape to win 5-4 and give ODU a 23-3 lead.
In the 197-pound match, Jacob Henderson would get two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead into the second period over Marshall Haas. After an escape from each wrestler, Henderson would hold onto his lead and defeat Haas 6-3. This decision gave ODU a 26-3 advantage.
Matt Tourdot would forfeit the heavyweight match, which gave The Citadel six team points; however, this wasn't nearly enough as the Monarchs defeated The Citadel 26-9 in the first round of the 2013 Virginia Duals.
In other first round action, No. 16 Edinboro cruised to victory over Army, which means ODU will wrestle Edinboro in the second round at 3 p.m. today.

Match #2: No. 25 Old Dominion vs. No. 16 Edinboro
The quarterfinal dual featured two nationally ranked teams in No. 25 Old Dominion and No. 16 Edinboro.
ODU's second dual of the day started with No. 10 Jerome Robinson (125) taking down Kory Mines to take a 2-0 advantage. Robinson would get a takedown in the second and third period on his way to defeating Mines, 6-0. ODU took the early 3-0 lead over Edinboro.
The 133-pound match featured two ranked wrestlers in No. 19 Scott Festejo and No. 4 A.J. Schopp. After a scoreless first period, Schopp would go onto pin Festejo with 33 seconds remaining in the second period. This gave Edinboro a 6-3 advantage over ODU.
The 141-pound bout also included two nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 15 Chris Mecate and No. 5 Mitchell Port. Port started off the match with a takedown but Mecate would answer that with a takedown of his own. Port then took Mecate down again before Mecate escaped. Port took a 6-3 lead into the third period and would end up beating Mecate 7-3. Edinboro now took a 9-3 lead.
For the third straight match, ODU and Edinboro's wrestlers were nationally ranked. No. 31 Alexander Richardson met up with No. 19 Dave Habat. Habat scored first with a two-point takedown. Richardson then escaped to cut the lead to 2-1. In the third period, Richardson escaped again to tie the match at 2-2; however, Habat would defeat Richardson 3-2 due to riding time.
No. 17 John Nicholson took on 157-pound Michael DePalma. After two Nicholson takedowns and two Depalma escapes, Nicholson led 4-2. DePalma would takedown Nicholson to tie the match at four-apiece. Nicholson would then escape and get one point for riding time to hold onto a 6-4 victory over DePalma. ODU cut the lead to 12-6.
In the 165-pound match, ODU's Brett Miller squared-off with Edinboro's Johnny Greisheimer. Greisheimer got off to a 3-0 start and never looked back. Miller would score off an escape; however, Greisheimer would defeat Miller 4-1. Edinboro now extended their lead to 15-6.
Next, 174-pounder Billy Curling wrestled Patrick Jennings. Curling took a 5-0 lead into the third period. Jennings started the third period off with an escape, but Curling would take Jennings down again on his way to an 8-1 win. Curling's decision allowed ODU to cut into the Edinboro lead again, making the team score 15-9 in favor of Edinboro.
Austin Coburn and Edinboro's Vince Pickett battled it out in the 184-pound match. Pickett started the scoring off with a takedown. After a Coburn escape, Pickett took Coburn down again giving Pickett a 4-1 advantage. Following another Coburn escape, Pickett took Coburn down for a third time to take a 6-2 lead. Pickett picked up one point for riding time and defeated Corburn 7-3. Edinboro now led ODU 18-9.
In the 197-pound match between Jacob Henderson and Warren Bosch, Henderson struck first. Henderson took a 2-0 lead into the third period, where he would get another takedown and two escapes. Henderson possessed a 5-0 lead before Bosch escaped. Henderson earned a riding time point on his way to a 6-1 victory.
In the last match of the day for Old Dominion, No. 33 Matt Tourdot had a showdown with No. 17 Ernest James. After a scoreless first period, James would escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead into the third period. With only 30 seconds left in the match, Tourdot escaped to tie the match at 1-1. James answered Tourdot's escape with a two-point takedown and a 3-1 lead. Tourdot immediately escaped; however, it was a little too late as James defeated Tourdot 3-2. This finalized Edinboro's 21-12 win over Old Dominion.
This meant that ODU would face the winner of the Bucknell/Buffalo wrestle-back match. Bucknell ended up beating Buffalo; therefore, ODU and Bucknell will meet tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The winner of the ODU/Bucknell match will take-on the winner of the Kent St./Arizona St. match at 4 p.m. The Monarchs can still finish as high as fifth tomorrow.
