Monarchs Wrestlers Split Last Two CAA Dual Matches
Jan. 25, 2003 The Old Dominion wrestling team split their last two matches Saturday at the first annual Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Duals hosted by George Mason University. The Monarchs defeated Sacred Heart 22-17 after falling to Rider, 30-12. With ODU down by one, 17-16, heading into the final bout, junior heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) earned a six-point fall over Sacred Heart's John Miller in 1:16 to give the Monarchs the come from behind victory. Lorthridge was a perfect 4-0 in the two-day meet as ODU dropped three of their four duals. ODU earned their first conference victory of the year but are now 4-5 overall, 1-3 in the CAA. In their first match of the day, Rider won the first six bouts of the meet to open up a 27-0 lead. Senior Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA), who also finished 4-0, earned the first Monarch win with his second pin of the weekend over Bob Pizzuto in 6:08. Lorthridge, and freshman 184-pounder, Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) were the only other two to win for ODU. Lorthridge and Wright are now tied for the team lead in wins as they improve their records to 20-3 and 20-4 respectively. Summerlin now has a team-high nine falls with an 18-2 record. ODU will be back in Norfolk next Saturday to host non-conference foe N.C. State in dual action at 2:00 p.m.
