Wrestling Defeats UNC-Greensboro 20-15

GREENSBORO, NC -The Old Dominion wrestling team got off to a fast start Thursday night, defeating UNC-Greensboro 20-15 on the road. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 8-5 for the season, surpassing the seven total wins of last season. The Monarchs took a 8-0 lead after B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) earned a 17-2 tech fall win over Chris Bencivenga and Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) took a 5-3 decision over David Johnson. The Spartans took the next two classes by decision to close the gap to 8-6, but consecutive back-to-back decisions by Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) and John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) extended the ODU lead to 14-6. Junior Adam Wright (Dayton, VA) earned the only pin of the night, defeating Freddy Valoy in the 184 weight class to give the Monarchs a clinching 20-6 lead. The Spartans took the next three weight classes by decision, but were unable to catch up to ODU. ODU will return to action Sunday afternoon for their annual Alumni Match, when the Monarchs host NC State at 1:00. Takedown Radio will webcast the dual live beginning at noon and 1992 Olympian and ODU Wrestling Hall of Famer Buddy Lee will showcase his jump roping skills from 12:50-1:00.
