NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team had their five match winning streak snapped in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. on Sunday afternoon. The No. 12 Chippewas from Central Michigan defeated Old Dominion, 25-6 in the McGuirk Arena.
Chris Mecate and Brennan Brumley picked up big wins for ODU, however, Central Michigan was able to hand ODU their first loss since Jan. 13 at the Virginia Duals against North Dakota State. Central Michigan moves to 12-3 on the season and has now won five matches in a row and 10 out of their last 11.
Head coach Steve Martin knows that there is a lot of wrestling left to be had this season, "We were disappointed in this loss to CMU today as they won the war on the top and bottom positions. A tough schedule allows us the opportunity to analyze and correct our weaknesses. We will go back to work on improving these positions so that we will be successful in March at the NCAA tournament."
No. 14 Jerome Robinson lost a tight match to Central Michigan's Joe Roth, 5-2. Roth was a NCAA Qualifier after winning the MAC Championships last year as a sophomore.
In the 133-pound match, No. 30 Scott Festejo had a showdown with No. 7 Scott Sentes. Sentes is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American. Festejo battled hard throughout the match, but came up short (7-3) against Sentes. This loss ended Festejo's six match winning streak. The Chippewas jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Monarchs.
After dropping the 125 and 133-pound matches, ODU first got on the board in the 141-pound match. No. 13 Chris Mecate cruised to a 6-1 victory over Central Michigan's Scott Mattingly. Mattingly was a NCAA qualifier last season. With the win, Mecate is now on a six match winning streak. The Monarchs only trailed the Chippewas 6-3.
The 149-pound match also featured two nationally ranked opponents in No. 31 Alexander Richardson and No. 18 Donnie Corby. Corby is a two-time NCAA qualifier and was the MAC champion at 157-pounds last season. In a very competitive and intense match, Corby was able to squeak out a 2-0 victory, which gave CMU a 9-3 lead over ODU. This loss snapped Richardson's six match winning streak.
Brennan Brumley got the start at 157-pounds for the Monarchs against No. 29 Lucas Smith. Brumley was able to get the better of the nationally ranked Smith in a 6-3 decision, which moved Old Dominion within three points of Central Michigan (9-6).
However, this was as close as the Monarchs would get to the Chippewas. In the 165-pound match, Old Dominion's Brett Miller lost to CMU`s No. 22 Mike Ottinger, 10-4. Last year, Ottinger became Central Michigan's first true-freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Marcus Johnson wrestled very tough for the Monarchs, but lost 2-0 to No. 21 Craig Kelliher in the 174-pound bout.
Austin Coburn was no match for the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the country, Ben Bennett. Bennett is only the fifth three-time All-American in Central Michigan's history. Bennett gave Central Michigan four team points as he won via major decision (9-0) over ODU's, Coburn.
Jacob Henderson lost an extremely close match to Jackson Lewis, 2-1 in the 197-pound match.
In the battle of heavyweights, Matt Tourdot went up against No. 5 Jarod Trice. Trice is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American. Tourdot proved he belonged with one of the country's best, but Trice would pull-out the 2-1 decision over Tourdot.
