NORFOLK, VA  -The Old Dominion wrestling team defeated NC State for the first time since the 1959 season Sunday afternoon, winning their dual 23-13 at the ODU Field House.  With the win, the Monarchs improve to 9-5 for the season, while NC State drops to 5-6.

ODU took a 7-0 lead after John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) earned a 6-3 decision over NC State's Kevin Gabrielson and Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) defeated Jeremy Colbert by a 14-5 major decision.  NC State came back, claiming the next two matches to tie the score at 7-7 before Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/125) earned a 11-3 major decision over Garrett Cummings and B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) earned the only pin of the match (4:49) over Jeremy Hartrum to give the Monarchs a 17-7 lead.

Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) defeated Jeff Breese by a 9-3 decision to extend the ODU lead to 20-7 before the Wolfpack won the next two matches by decision to close the gap to 20-13.  Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) took the final match of the day, defeating NC State's Ryan Nowicki by a 9-4 decision to give ODU the 23-13 win.

The Monarchs return to action on Friday, February 11, when they travel to Lexington, VA to take on Virginia Military Institute at 7:30.  ODU returns home next Sunday, February 13, to host James Madison University in their annual Scholarship Match.  The JMU match starts at 1:00 at the ODU Field House.
