Monarch Wrestlers Take Down Campbell, 28-11

Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion wrestling squad picked up their first win of the season today over visiting CAA foe Campbell, 28-11. The Monarchs are now 1-8, 1-3 CAA while the Camels slip to 3-5, 2-3 CAA. The opening bouts went back and forth between both teams, with Campbell taking an early 11-7 lead after five matches. Old Dominion then blew the contest wide open with five straight wins, including two pins, to secure the 28-11 victory. Junior Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA) defeated Vic Arena at 157 and Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) pinned Brian Hocum to put the Monarchs ahead 16-11. Senior Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) then fought off a determined Lantz Nixon at 174 to push the lead to 19-11. Freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) provided the back-breaker against the Camels, pinning Jon Carlisle at 184 and giving ODU an insurmountable 25-11 lead. It was the second time in as many matches that Adams moved up two weight classes to wrestle at 184, the 165-pounder defeated JMU's defending CAA champ Dave Colabella on Thursday night. Jeff Rusak (#4 InterMat/ #4 AWN) improves to 24-0 overall and 9-0 in dual meets. He remains undefeated in CAA wrestling with a 4-0 record. Old Dominion will host their scholarship wrestling match on Thursday, February 14 against the University of Maryland.
