Monarchs Fall to Cavaliers, 34-13

The Old Dominion wrestling team lost to the University of Virginia, 34-13, in their annual Scholarship Match Sunday afternoon at the ODU Fieldhouse. The Cavs earned two pins in the first two matches of the day jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead. Bob Seidel took care of ODU's Charlie Busch (Rochester, MN) in just :40 into the 141-pound match, while Paul Bjorlo pinned freshman Jon Stovich (Latrobe, PA) in 1:44 at 149. Tim Foley then increased UVA's advantage to 16-0 with a 15-4 major decision win over freshman Rob Gosnell (Warrenton, VA) at 157. After Will Durkee defeated rookie Matt Ulrey (St. Mary's, MI) 6-2, senior Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) put the Monarchs on the board in his 174 match. He outfought Brian Muir for a 5-2 decision, earning three points for ODU. In a battle of newcomers at 184 pounds, Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) pinned Ram McDonnell in 5:25 to bring ODU within 10, 19-9. However, Andy DeMartino and Josh Etu of Virginia put the home team away in the 197 and heavyweight matches. DeMartino outlasted junior Greg Gill (Chesapeake,VA) in double overtime rideout while junior heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) suffered a rare pin at the hands of Etu. A forfeit at 125 by ODU gave the visitors a 34-9 commanding edge. Redshirt freshman Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) picked a 12-1 major decision over Brian Sticca to end the contest. ODU (5-8/2-4) will be action again this Saturday when they visit Maryland at 2:00 p.m.
