LEXINGTON, VA  -The Old Dominion wrestling team won their third straight dual Friday night, defeating Virginia Military Institute 27-11 on the road. The win gives the Monarchs a 10-5 duals record for the season, while VMI drops to 6-4-1.

VMI's Sam Alvarenga defeated Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/149) by a 4-1 decision to give the Keydets a 3-0 lead, but a 6-4 decision victory by Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/157) tied the match up at 3-3. VMI took a 6-3 lead after VMI's Tommy Cunningham defeated Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) by a 3-2 decision. Back-to-back major decisions by John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) and Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) put ODU up 11-6, but a 15-0 tech fall victory by the Keydet's Corry Murray over Shea Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood/197) tied the match at 11-11.

The Monarchs took over the match, winning the last four weight classes to take the 27-11 victory. B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) had ODU's only pin of the night (6:39), defeating Tyler Anthony, while Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) had a 16-5 major decision victory over Jeremy Adams. John Dolida (Bridgewater, NJ/Hwt.) and Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) both won by decisions.

ODU returns to the mat Sunday for their annual Scholarship Match, hosting James Madison University at 1:00. Tickets are $5, with proceeds going toward ODU Wrestling Scholarships. ODU students get in free with valid student ID.
