Wrestling Monarchs Upended At No. 14 Virginia Tech

SALEM, Va. - In a battle of Top 25 opponents No. 14 Virginia Tech was able to get the best of No. 24 Old Dominion, 29-12, Thursday evening at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem, Va. The loss drops ODU to 10-5-1 on the year, while the Hokies improve to 17-5. The match was the regular season finale for both squads. The dual started at 141-pounds and Virginia Tech was able to race out to a 14-0 lead after winning the first three bouts. No. 13 Chris Brown and senior Eric Decker got the Monarchs on the board after each picking up decisions at 165 and 174-pounds. After ODU's Joe Budi dropped a 4-2 decision to Tech's No. 18 Tommy Spellman, the Hokies would then forfeit at 197-pounds which brought the Monarchs to within just five team points (17-12). In the most pivotal bout of the match, Tech's Chris Penny narrowly edged ODU freshman Grant Chapman, 4-3. Trialing 20-12, ODU took a forfeit at 125-pounds and Tech's Brock LiVorio topped Justin LaValle to wrap up the competition. ODU next competes at the CAA Championships on March 5 in Lawrenceville, N.J.
