NORFOLK, Va. – Two of Old Dominion University’s unattached wrestlers placed in the 2013 National Collegiate Open at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, Va. Jack Dechow placed second in the 184-pound tournament, while Kevin Beazley placed third in the 197-pound tournament.

In Dechow’s first match, he cruised to a 14-4 major decision over Sacred Heart’s Zachary Moron. Next, Dechow defeated Wesley Phipps (Penn State), 6-2. In the quarterfinal bout, Dechow ran into the No. 1 seed from Iowa State, Boaz Beard. Beard was an NCAA qualifier last year after placing second at the Big 12 Championships, but it was Dechow who dominated this match. Dechow defeated Beard, 8-3. The semifinal match featured Dechow and Lehigh’s Brandon Griffin. In a low scoring bout, Dechow was able to hold onto a 3-1 victory and advance to the championship match against The Citadel’s Turtogtokh Luvsandorj. Luvsandorj is a three-time NCAA qualifier and his currently redshirting this season. Luvsandorj had his hands full with Old Dominion’s feisty-freshman. In what out to be a highly competitive match, Luvsandorj squeeked out a 3-2 victory, as Dechow was hit with a stalling point.

Dechow improved his record to 34-12 and has now placed in a total of eight different tournaments while wrestling unattached for ODU this season.

Kevin Beazley pinned (0:39) Hayden Hrymack of Rutgers in the first match of the 197-pound tournament. Beazley had no problems in his second match either, as he majored Ty Snook (Maryland), 11-1. In Beazley’s semi-final bout, he went up against Nick Whitenburg from Eastern Michigan. Whitenburg pulled-out a tough (5-3) victory over Beazley. This loss placed Beazley against Bloomsburg’s Michael Mirra, for a chance to advance to the third place match. Only 13 seconds went off the clock before Beazley pinned Mirra. In the third place match, Beazley had a showdown with Paul Rands (Navy). Beazley proved to be too much for Rands, as Beazley placed third after picking-up an 11-1 major decision victory over Rands.

Beazley improved his record to 33-13 and has now placed in a total of eight different tournaments while wrestling unattached for ODU this season.
