ODU Wrestling Finishes Ninth at CAA Championships
March 9, 2003 Junior heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) was selected as an alternate for the 2003 NCAA Championships after finishing third in his class at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. Old Dominion finished ninth in the team standings with 23 total points. Hofstra won the tournament with 124 points, winning six individual weight class titles and finishing 59 points ahead of second place Sacred Heart. Lorthridge highlighted ODU's weekend with a third place finish with a 3-1 record. His lone defeat came at the hands of second place Carmelo Marrero of Rider. Senior 174-pounder Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) was the Monarch's only other top four finisher as he took forth in his class with a 2-2 record. He lost to Jon Carlisle of Campbell, 5-1, in the consolation round final. The 27 NCAA qualifiers from this weekend will now move on to the Nationals, which will be held March 20-22 in Kansas City, Missouri. Lorthridge currently serves as the league's number two alternate.
