Brown, Wright Reach Quarterfinals At 2005 Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Monarch freshman Chris Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior Adam Wright (Dayton, Va.) highlighted Old Dominion's entries at the 2005 Southern Scuffle held this weekend at the Greensboro Special Events Center. Both Brown and Wright reached the quarterfinals of their respective weight classes. Brown reached the quarterfinals at 157 with two straight decisions. He opened the tournament with a 9-3 decision over Matt Hill of Edinboro in the Round of 32 and used a 6-4 decision over CAA rival George Mason's Mitch Webster in the Round of 16. The Great Bridge High School product ended his tournament appearance with a pin by Seth Martin from Lock Haven. Wright finished tournament action with a 3-1 record at 197, including two decisions. His Round of 64 appearance featured a pin in 4:20 against Niels Madsen of VMI, followed by 9-4 decision over Rider's T.J. Morrison in the Round of 32, and an 8-1 decision over Antonio Mirando of Navy in the Round of 16. The Dayton, Virginia native fell as Max Askren from Missouri collected an 11-0 decision. Also competing at 157 was redshirt sophomore Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, Va.), who reached the Round of 16 as a 12th seed. Pullano used a 5-3 decision over Duke's Addison Nuding to advance from the Round of 32. In the following round against Tony Hook from Oregon State, he fell with a 6-4 decision. Along with Brown, the Monarch grapplers has several young members of its roster competing in the two-day, 10-mat event. At 125, freshman Braxdon Scaletta (Valley View, Ohio) was pinned during the Round of 32 by Oregon State's Eric Stevenson. Freshman Ryan Williams (Cumberland, Pa.) went 1-1 at 133 to reach the Round of 32. Williams pinned Mike Ciotti of Pittsburgh in 1:51, but fell to Terry Jackson of Ohio with a 5-0 decision.
Redshirt sophomore B.J. Compton (Christianburg, Va.) also went 1-1 over the weekend, competing at 131. Opening action in the Round of 64, Compton advanced with a 14-4 decision over Matt Fleming of Ohio State before falling to Leigh's Cory Cooperman with a 12-5 decision. At 149, freshman Jeff Becker (Slippery Rock, Pa.) fell in his Round of 64 match with as North Carolina State's Joe Caramanica picked up the 16-7 decision. Rookie Ben Fiacco (Ackworth, Ga.) dropped a 4-2 decision at 165 in the Round of 64 as Fiacco's took on the tournament's seventh seed, Garrett Atkinson of North Carolina. Freshmen Bryan Lenhardt (Glouchester, Va.) and David Mendoza (Wyomissing, Pa.) both dropped decisions in their respective weight classes. Lenhard fell with a 5-4 decision at 174 in the Round of 64, while Mendoza fell with a 10-5 decision at 184 in the Round of 32. In the heavyweight bracket, Old Dominion's entry of senior John Dolida (Bridgewater, N.J.) was pinned by Ohio State's Kirk Nail. The Monarch wrestling team returns to the mat on Saturday, January 7th in Harrisonburg, Virginia competing in the Virginia Intercollegiates.
