The Midlands: Final Brackets
NORFOLK, Va. – Kevin Beazley placed sixth in the 197-pound tournament while wrestling unattached for Old Dominion University in the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Chicago, Ill. Beazley also won the Gorriaran Memorial Award. The Gorriaran Award is one of the most coveted individual honors awarded to any college wrestler. Presented to the wrestler who pinned the most opponents in the least amount of time, the Gorriaran is a staple at the annual NCAA Division I championships, as well as other major college tournaments (i.e. Th Midlands).|
In Beazley’s first match, he pinned No. 26 Alex Polizzi (Northwestern) 1:56 into the match. Beazley then faced No. 5 Nate Schiedel of Binghamton University. Beazley went on to pin Schiedel only 1:09 into the first period.
Beazley would go onto lose his third match to No. 7 Mario Gonzalez (Illinois). In Beazley’s first wrestle-back match, he pinned No. 22 Jackson Hein of Wisconsin at the 3:55 mark. Beazley’s victory assured him another matchup with Alex Polizzi of Northwestern. This time, Beazley beat Polizzi in a 10-5 decision.
For a chance to wrestle for third place, Beazley lost to No. 12 Taylor Meeks of Oregon State. This loss placed Beazley in the fifth place match, in which Beazley would go onto to lose 7-3 to No. 7 Mario Gonzalez.
This means Beazley placed ahead of No. 5 Schiedel (Binghamton), No. 7 Gonzalez (Illinois), No. 10 Braden Atwood (Purdue), No. 15 Christian Boley (Maryland), No. 22 Hein (Wisconsin), No. 27 Derrick Borlie (Virginia Tech) and No. 31 Peter Huntley (Navy).
Beazley has experienced his share of success so far this season as he has placed third at the Knight Point Open, second at the N.C. State Open, sixth at the Nittany Lion Open and second at the Cleveland State Open.
Jack Dechow also wrestled unattached for ODU in the Midlands and went 2-2 in his four matches in the 184-pound tournament.
Old Dominion wrestlers will return to action on Jan. 1-2 of 2013 when they will compete in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
