Three Monarchs Remain in Contention After Day One at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Three members of the Old Dominion University wrestling team remain in contention after day one of the annual Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. Freshman Rob Deutsch, redshirt sophomore Justin LaValle and sophomore Tristan Warner will wrestle Monday to try and earn a place in each of their respective weight classes in the consolation brackets. Deutsch advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket before Minnesota's Zachary Sanders, the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 125 pounds, handed him a 7-3 defeat. The Monarch downed Navy's Patrick Prada and Duke's Pete Terezza to get to the quarterfinal round where he is slated to square off against North Carolina's Brian Bokoski in the consolation quarterfinals. LaValle easily defeated Indiana's Mitchelle Richey and Duke's Chris Mullen before getting pinned by fifth-ranked Michael Mangrum of Oregon State. Once in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds, LaValle pinned Army's Connor Hanafee and won a thrilling 7-5 match over Hofstra's Luke Vaith to remain in contention to place on Monday. He is set to face North Carolina's Evan Henderson in the consolation quarterfinals. Warner downed host Chattanooga's John Lampe with an 11-0 major decision before also running into the top ranked wrestler in the country in his weight class in Penn State's David Taylor where he lost via tech fall, 21-6. In the consolation ladder, the Monarch pinned Koort Leyrer of Cleveland State and slipped past Campbell's Ryan Krecker, 5-4, to advance to the consolation quarterfinals against Chattanooga's Brandon Wright on Monday.
