NORFOLK, Va. - Three unattached wrestlers for Old Dominion University competed in the Franklin and Marshall Open in Lancaster, Pa. This is the first time that Franklin and Marshall College has hosted this open-tournament.
The tournament featured 270 wrestlers from over 35 schools. Other competing schools included: Princeton, Clarion, Navy, Lock Haven, Bucknell, Hofstra, Rutgers, North Carolina, VMI, Penn State, Columbia, Maryland, Drexel, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Rider and Gardner-Webb, amongst others.
Jacob Henderson went 4-1 on the day, which was good enough to place second in the 197-pound tournament. In Henderson's first match of the day, he defeated Eldar Muradov (UMBC) 3-1. Henderson would then cruise to an 8-1 victory over Ethan Keiser of Drexel. In the quarterfinal bout, Henderson beat Colin Ely (unattached-Franklin and Marshall) 7-4. Dylan Devine (Maryland) was Henderson's next opponent in the semifinal match. Devine was not able to stand in-between Henderson and the championship match, as Henderson handed Devine a 5-2 loss. Henderson faced Paul Rands (Navy) in the championship match. Henderson scored the first point of the match with an escape before Rands reeled-off three straight points to take a 3-1 advantage. Henderson then escaped to cut the lead to 3-2; however, Rands did not allow the match to get any closer as he defeated Henderson 4-2 for the championship.
Lucas Ryan lost his first match 3-2 to Chuck Boddy of Bucknell in the heavyweight tournament. Ryan would go onto win three straight wrestle-back matches (3-0, 5-3 and pin). In the quarterfinal bout of the consolation bracket, Ryan lost a tough 2-0 match to Cody Mason (Lock Haven). Ryan was one win away from placing in the 285-pound tournament.
Jacob Kingett went 1-2 on the day in the 149-pound tournament.
Old Dominion will return to action on Jan. 11-12, when they will be competing in the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va.
