NORFOLK, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has announced that Old Dominion University’s Chris Mecate has earned the CAA Rookie of the Week award. This is the first time that Mecate has won this award.
The 141-pound redshirt freshman from Highland, Cali. went 2-1 this past weekend in his first ever Virginia Duals. Mecate’s only loss came at the hands of No. 5 Mitchell Port (Edinboro) in a 7-3 decision. After that loss, Mecate went on to defeat Kyle Bauer (Kent State) 2-0 and Mark Erickson (North Dakota State) 8-3. ODU ended up placing eighth at the 33rd annual Virginia Duals.
This is not Mecate’s first taste of success at the collegiate level, as he is currently 27-7 this season with six pins. Mecate has placed in five tournaments so far this season: Clarion Open (first), Mat Town Open (first), Nittany Lion Open (fifth), Cleveland State Open (fourth) and the Southern Scuffle (fourth).
Last week, Mecate was ranked as high as No. 15 in the country at 141-pounds.
Mecate and the rest of the wrestling-Monarchs will be back in action this Saturday, Jan. 19, when they will compete in the CAA Duals in Fairfax, Va.
