NORFOLK, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association has announced that Old Dominion University’s redshirt sophomore, Chris Mecate, as the CAA Rookie Wrestler of the Week for all competition Feb. 5-11.
Mecate is coming off his seventh consecutive victory in a 6-2 decision against the University of Virginia’s No. 15 Joe Spisak. Spisak was an NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds in 2011. Mecate’s last loss came over a month ago at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 11.
For the year, Mecate is 32-7 overall, 6-1 in duals and 3-0 in CAA matches. This week, Mecate is nationally ranked as high as No. 11 within the 141-pound weight class.
The Monarchs will be back in action this Thursday, Feb. 14, when they will host George Mason at 8:00 p.m. for Senior Night in the Ted Constant Convocation Center. A pre-match social will be held in the Big Blue Room of the Ted Constant Center. The free social will begin at 6:30 p.m. Adults beverages will be provided.
