NORFOLK, Va. – Recent Old Dominion University wrestling signee, Jake Velarde, joined a very elite club this past Saturday by winning his fourth high school state championship in Tacoma, Wash.

Velarde became just the 10th wrestler in the state of Washington to join the short-list of four-time champs.

Velarde, a 138-pounder from North Kitsap High School, had his hands full with Maverick Reddaway (Fife High School) in the Class 2A State Championship match on Saturday. Velarde and Reddaway needed 20 seconds of overtime, before Velarde took Reddaway down (3-1 dec.) to complete what was nothing short of an extremely dominant high school career for Velarde.

In Velarde’s four state championship matches, he only surrendered a total of five points. Velarde ended his high school career with a 157-5 record.

Brandon Jeske (Virginia Beach, Va.), Austin Eads (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) and Jordan Marshall (Bradford, Ohio) will join Velarde next year on the Old Dominion University wrestling team.

The current Monarchs will be back in action on March 9 in Boston, Mass., when they will compete in their final CAA Championships.
