NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team had a total of 11 wrestlers place in the Knight Point Open in Clarion, Pa. on Nov. 4. Redshirt freshman Chris Mecate and redshirt sophomore Jacob Henderson both earned their first career collegiate tournament titles by winning their respective weight classes.
Mecate pinned his first two opponents and then ran off three more wins to go 5-0 on the weekend. The redshirt freshman beat Ty Lydic from the University of Pittsburgh 9-1 in the 141 title match of the Knight Point Open. Also, in action at 141 was Justin LaValle. LaValle was dominant as well, as he went 3-0 with one pin for the weekend before withdrawing from the tournament.
Henderson won all four of his matches on his way to becoming the Knight Point Open champion at 197 pounds. Kevin Beazley wrestled unattached at 197 and went 5-1 with two pins, earning himself a third place finish.
Tristan Warner won his first four matches with one pin in the 165 pound tournament before having to leave the championship match due to an injury against Tyler Wilps from the University of Pittsburgh.
After losing his first match 6-3 to Wilps, Adrin Taylor reeled off six straight wins in the consolation bracket before losing the third place match 10-4. Taylor ended up going 6-2 on the day. Both Rodin Ndandula (1-2) and Tanner Tinsley (unattached: 0-2) also wrestled at 165 over the weekend.
Lucas Ryan wrestled unattached at 285 pounds, and finished with a 4-1 record which was good enough for a second place finish. Ryan was pinned by Zac Thomusseit of the University of Pittsburgh in the championship match. After losing his third match in the winner's bracket, Matt Tourdot won four straight wrestle-backs to earn a third place finish at 285. Also wrestling heavyweight was Danny Davis, who went 2-2.
Rob Deutsch capped off an impressive 5-1 weekend with a third place finish. Deutsch beat David White of Binghamton University 6-2 in the battle for third place. Jerome Robinson withdrew from the 125 tournament after winning his first two matches. Robinson won his first match at the 3:31 mark after going up 17-1 over Tyler Peck of Mercyhurst University. Buddy Scarborough went 1-2 in the 125 pound tournament.
Jack Dechow wrestled unattached at 184 and placed third after going 6-1 for the weekend.
Scott Festejo won his first three matches before falling to Shelton Mack from the University of Pittsburgh. Festejo ended up placing fourth after going 4-2 in the 133 pound tournament. Michael Hayes wrestled unattached at 133, and finished with a record of 3-2 with one pin.
Alexander Richardson finished the 149 pound tournament in fourth place after going 4-2. Pete Baldwin also wrestled at 149 and went 2-2.
John Nicholson withdrew from the 157 pound tournament after winning his first three matches. Nicholson pinned Brandon Gavin from Jamestown C.C. 1:12 into his first match.
Old Dominion had four guys wrestle at 174. Billy Curling went 2-2, Joe Jessen wrestled unattached and went 1-2. Brett Miller went 0-1 and Marcus Johnson dropped his first two matches.
The Monarchs will hit Missouri and Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. on Nov. 10. ODU is scheduled to wrestle Missouri at 11:00 am and Purdue at 1 pm. The match against Purdue will be available via webcast.
