SALEM, Va. - Old Dominion will compete in its first tournament of the 2009-10 season on Sunday, Nov. 8 as the wrestling Monarchs travel to Salem, Va. for the second annual Hokie Open.

At last year's Hokie Open, ODU placed five wrestlers in the top-three of their weight class. James Nicholson and Jesse Strawn dominated their respective weight classes, while Kaylen Baxter and Eric Decker placed second. Joe Budi garnered a third-place result at 184-pounds.

Old Dominion is ranked No. 19 in the nation according to D1Wrestling.net. Additionally, five ODU wrestlers are listed in the individual rankings, highlighted by Nicholson, who is ranked No. 7 in the 125-pound weight class. Nicholson went a remarkable 36-4 last season and captured the CAA Tournament title in his class.

Strawn and Chris Brown are both ranked in the Top 15. Strawn is 11th in the 197-pound weight class after going 36-13 last season and Brown placed 12th after winning the CAA Tournament at 165-pounds in 2009.

Other Monarchs nationally ranked include Decker and Budi. Decker is 21st at 174 and Budi is 25th at 184.

The Hokie Open will take place at the Salem Civic Center and over 450 wrestlers will be competing on 10 mats throughout the day. The event starts at 9 a.m. and for more information, go to www.hokieopen.com.

The Monarchs will send nearly their entire roster to the event, but only 14 will compete attached. The remainder of the roster will compete unattached.
