NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team will be competing in the Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 2. Action is set to begin in Penn State's Recreational Hall at 8:30 a.m.
This event, run by the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, will feature upwards of 500 wrestlers from over 30 teams from around the East Coast and the Midwest. NCAA rules will apply with a double elimination tournament consisting of 32 wrestlers per weight class.
The Monarchs are coming off a 22-13 win against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 25. Old Dominion won five straight matches to overcome an early 10-3 deficit and hand Iowa State a 22-13 loss in front of 2,055 fans at the Hilton Coliseum. This marked the second straight year that ODU beat Iowa State.
Six Monarch wrestlers picked up big wins for ODU against Iowa State, including: Jerome Robinson (125), Scott Festejo (133), Justin LaValle (141), Alexander Richardson (149), John Nicholson (157), and Billy Curling (174).
Old Dominion has a season record of six wrestlers nationally ranked in their respective weight classes. Robinson, Festejo, LaValle, Nicholson, Curling, and Jacob Henderson (197) are all currently ranked throughout various national wrestling media outlets.
The next dual for the Monarchs takes place on Friday, Dec. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center when American University comes to town.
