PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team saw their three-game win streak end on Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center as they fell to Drexel, 64-50.
Junior Stephanie Gardner scored a career-high 18 points to lead Old Dominion (16-7, 7-4), who lost for the first time since Jan. 27. Gardner was 7-for-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc to go along with two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Drexel (16-6, 9-2), who led from start to finish, turned it over just seven times which was the fewest by any Lady Monarch opponent this season. The Dragons were led by CAA scoring leader Hollie Mershon who had 19 points and seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and was 8-for-16 from the field.
Old Dominion finishes 16-6 all-time against Drexel in CAA games. The Lady Monarchs were never able to get in synch Sunday however as they mustered just 18 points at halftime which was tied for fewest all season as Drexel took a 32-18 lead into intermission.
ODU shot 38.5 percent for the game (20-for-52) while Drexel shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55). The Dragons had a 36-28 rebounding advantage as well as a 32-18 advantage in the paint while the ODU bench outscored DU, 31-5.
The Lady Monarchs connected on seven three-pointers including a pair from redshirt senior Mairi Buchan who had six points in the contest along with senior Jackie Cook while sophomore Shae Kelley added six points, six rebounds and three assists to go with a block.
Drexel’s Nicki Jones added 15 points, five rebounds and three blocks while Tayloor Wootton had 12 points and five rebounds to pace the Dragons.
Old Dominion returns home briefly on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip at the Ted Constant Convocation Center against James Madison before heading back on the road Thursday at Delaware at 7 p.m.
